Bringing Shabbos and holiday meals to individuals & families in need for over 25 years
Our Origin
Tomchei Shabbos of Manhattan began assisting the Upper West and East Sides as well as the greater Manhattan community over 25 years ago. Originally called Oneg Shabbat of the West Side, it started in 1998 as a Bat Mitzvah chessed project, as one young woman decided that she wanted to provide Shabbat and Holiday food to those in the community unable to provide for themselves.
The original goal was to make a meaningful difference for a few families. Starting with a handful of volunteers and a budget of only $25,000, Tomchei Shabbos of Manhattan has since provided over 500,000 meals and assists over 100 families each week, with an annual budget of almost $500,000 to assist our community’s needy.
About Us
Tomchei Shabbos of Manhattan is run entirely by volunteers with almost zero overhead. All of the funds collected go directly to pay for the meals and services that we provide.
Referrals to the program come from community members, as well as from rabbis and lay leaders.
In cooperation with local establishments, prepared meals are delivered in a respectful manner which ensures the dignity and privacy of the recipients. Tomchei Shabbos recipients can receive prepared meals delivered to their home, or receive a weekly credit to shop in local stores. This ensures the recipients’ anonymity, and allows them to be treated in the same manner as other customers.
Tomchei Shabbos is always mindful of the sensitivity and privacy of our recipients and all of our programming and services are provided in a 100% confidential manner.
Please consider getting involved with Tomchei Shabbos of Manhattan by donating, volunteering, and attending our events. We are certain that you will find the experience rewarding.
